Medusa was a figure from Greek mythology, one of the three Gorgon sisters, and the only one who was mortal. Originally a beautiful woman, she was transformed into a monster by the goddess Athena—her hair turned into snakes, and her gaze had the power to turn anyone who looked at her into stone. Medusa lived in isolation until she was slain by the hero Perseus, who used a mirrored shield to avoid her deadly gaze and decapitated her.
